Do drugs treat hypochondriacism?

A team of researchers from Japan have found a new treatment that helps patients with severe anxiety disorders get rid of symptoms of the condition.

According to a press release from the Japanese National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the treatment is called hypochondric syndrome and it can be administered in a single dose to patients with a history of severe anxiety.

The team, led by Dr Kenichi Fukui, a professor of psychiatry at the NIMH, conducted a clinical trial in collaboration with researchers from the University of Tokyo.

Dr Fukui said:”There are some people with severe hypochondrial syndrome who have an abnormal reaction to a medication and don’t feel well, so we decided to test our treatment in this way.”

The treatment was developed to treat people who have a history and a physical condition that causes symptoms such as fever and abdominal pain.

“They also have a chronic illness, which can cause them to have an increased response to medication and to the physical side of their illness.”

Dr Fukuzui said the team tested its treatment in 30 patients with the condition, and found that in the group that received the drug, the response was significantly reduced.

“This is a significant result for us, and it shows that this drug can actually help people with a severe anxiety disorder,” he said.

“What we think is that this medication helps patients to relax, and helps them to reduce their symptoms.”

Dr Hideo Ueno, a research fellow at the institute, said: “Our results indicate that the drug can improve symptoms in people with this condition, which is an important goal for us.”

Dr Ueno said the drug would be used to treat severe anxiety, including those with depression and anxiety disorders.

The Japanese researchers are now working on an improved version of the drug that could be given to people who also have other medical conditions, such as a chronic respiratory disorder.

The NIMC is currently investigating whether there is a cure for the condition but Dr Fukui hopes it could be available within 10 years.

He said: ‘We’re also trying to find out whether this treatment can be applied to other people as well, like people with depression, and how this treatment would be of benefit for people with other disorders.

“He added: “We have also been looking at other types of treatment, such a benzodiazepine-like treatment, and so we have also planned to develop a treatment that is based on the brain chemistry of patients with this disease.
